515 Gallery is pleased to present Embodied Terrain, a three-person exhibition featuring etchings by Britney Penouilh, paintings by Regina Scully, and sculptures by Taylor Tschider. Each work in the show represents a personal narrative and relationship with landscapes in the physical and metaphysical realms. With consideration of The Hero’s Journey, a sympathetic plot with a universal narrative structure featuring a protagonist driven by adventure who confronts obstacles, overcomes them, and reaps rewards; Embodied Terrain explores the complex landscapes along this human journey: discovery, struggle, failure, death, and rebirth.

Britney Penouilh is an interdisciplinary artist whose work depicts landscapes with a deep consideration of geologic time. Devoid of color, rewarding viewership, and reliance on light, Penouilh’s etchings on Plexiglas suggest presence and absence, materiality, and ephemerality. While lamenting the fragility of the desert and glacial landscapes, Penouilh contextualizes our relationship with plastic and the prevalence of climate change through material and subject matter.

Regina Scully’s paintings explore imaginary landscapes with rhythmic brushwork and vibrant color palettes, abstracting and filtering images recalled from photographs, experiences, memories, and meditative journeys.  The labyrinthine spaces in her paintings are evocative of vistas, poetic vignettes, intriguing characters, objects, and an exploration of paint itself.

Drawing elements from iconography related to tropes of masculinity and conquest resulting in achievement but also humility, Taylor Tschider’s resin sculptures explore the construction of autobiography as the artist sees mold-making as reincarnation in relation to the hero’s journey. His life-size resin sculptures are deconstructed fragments of a triumphant figure mountaineering the icy terrain.
